Karen Ann Talbott –
I have had my Berkey Light for over 2 yrs and I LOVE IT! My friends come over knowing they’ll have clean tasting & a fresh glass of water. I use the purified water whenever a recipe calls for water and for cooking as well. It tastes so good.
I take my Sports Berkey to work so I will have clean water there to.
Thank you Berkey Guy for providing my family and friends with refreshing purified water.
Very Respectfully,
Karen Ann Talbott, Callaway, MD

Does this filter remove chemicals such as pesticides and herbicides?
David –
Thanks for the question Sarah. Yes, the Berkeys are designed to remove pesticides as well as herbicides. Here’s a direct quote from the manufacturer, New Millennium Concepts, Ltd.:

I live next to the Pacific Ocean. Does this system filter out salt?
2nd question: how long do the filters last and is there any “cleaning procedure” to extend life.
David –
The Black Berkey filters are not designed to handle salt water, only fresh water.
Black Berkey Elements are sold in pairs & one pair of Black Berkeys is rated to produce up to 6,000 gallons of water. The PF2 Fluoride & Arsenic Filters are designed to be used with the Black Berkeys. The PF2s are also sold in pairs and are rated to produce 1,000 gallons of water.
The Black Berkeys come with instructions that cover cleaning & maintenance of the filters. It’s basically as simple as using a brush/slightly abrasive scrub pad & clean water. You essentially brush the Black Berkey to remove the outer layer of carbon & then rinse it with clean & cool water. There’s no need to use any kind of detergent, chemicals, or hot water. Doing so will likely ruin the filter.
-Thanks,
David

How many gallons can you do before you have to replace the filters? Thanks so much.

David Hello~
Can you please explain the difference between the black filters and white ceramic? Which ones filter out more contaminants?
The travel filter uses the black filter correct? and the water bottle?
Does the light filter use electricity?
Thank you- Heidi
David –
Heidi,
Thanks for asking. The Black Berkey Elements remove more contaminants from the water as well as produce many more gallons of purified water than the white ceramic filters. Both filters can be scrubbed to lengthen their lives but the Black Berkeys can be primed (backflushed) as well.
The Travel Berkey comes with the Black Berkey Elements but its dimensions also fit the white ceramic filters. The Berkey Light system needs batteries or a power source only if you are using the LED (light emitting diode) base along with it. The LED base does nothing to treat the water; it simply provides ambient light.

does the berkey light system able to be upgraded to four filters?
jeff –
Great question, the Berkey Light can hold up to 4 Black Berkey Elements at a time.
Ken –
Question about Floride.
Can you tell me the percent of Floride that will be removed from the water?
Thanks,
Ken
jeff –
Ken,
Optimally, it can remove over 99 percent, but on average the PF2 Filters used with a Berkey Light system will reduce fluoride up to 95 percent.
Jeff
Michelle –
Does it remove rust?
David –
Thanks for asking. Yes, it does reduce rust taste & color.

We’ve had the Berkey Light for almost a year now. Our city water has a strange chemical taste which is entirely removed by the Berkey water filter. Although our city does not use fluoride I also have the Berkey fluoride filters. We use the filtered water for cooking and drinking and the taste is really great! It’s so much better than the bottled water we bought for a couple of years after my distiller broke and before we bought the Berkey Light. I figure we used to spend approximately $15 a month on bottled water so the Berkey Light system will pay for itself in about 17 months. It’s also nice not to have to recycle so many empty plastic water containers. I’ve had several different water filters and distillers over the last 35 years and the Berkey is by far the best of all of them, the easiest to use, has the longest lasting filters and the best tasting water.

Hello from the Big Island of Hawaii where we were hit by hurricane Isbel. We were off power for 12 days here in Puna as there were trees down everywhere, no phone service either.
While others were picking up drinking water and Ice every day I was able to pull the water from my catchment tank
uninterupted. I also had a spigot at the bottom of my tank which helped. So good to be prepared!
I keep telling people to get one as we are close to the Volcano and vog is in the air. Mabe they will now.
I love my Berkey and have had it for some time now and
never want to be without mine.
Mahalo!

What is the difference between the light system and the regular system? Does the light system need electricity? TIA
jeff –
The only difference is that the LED Version has a light, the light does not do anything else, just provide illumination.
